By Jon Ritterbush, Electronic Resources Librarian
ritterbushjr@unk.edu

The Calvin T. Ryan Library is pleased to announce the launch of a new Enhanced Catalog, accessible from the Research Tools menu on the Library homepage and available at http://encore.unk.edu.

The Enhanced Catalog features a simple keyword search box, as shown below, but delivers highly sophisticated search results.
 keyword

Links within the Enhanced Catalog results screens allow users to refine their searches based on various “facets” such as location, material type and publication date.

A “Tag Cloud” will provide a list of subjects related to their search from which users may explore additional related topics, and a “Recently Added” list highlights the newest materials on a given topic within the library’s collections.

For those accustomed to using the Library Catalog at http://rosi.unk.edu – fear not!   This “Classic Catalog” will remain available from the Library’s homepage and from within the Enhanced Catalog.

In the near future, book jackets will also be added to Enhanced Catalog results.  If you have questions about the Enhanced Catalog, please contact a librarian.   Feedback and suggestions regarding this new service are also welcomed, and may be submitted through our online suggestion box.

Shh! We’re writing the Constitution!

By Rochelle Krueger, Curriculum Associate
kruegerr@unk.edu

Shh!  We’re writing the Constitution! is a book by Jean Fritz and just one of the many materials that can be found in the Curriculum/Non-book Department at the Calvin T. Ryan Library!  September 17, 1787, marked the signing of the Constitution of the United States. This is the document guaranteeing citizens “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It was later revised to give us the Bill of Rights, to give African Americans their rights as citizens, and to give women the right to vote. Now Constitution Day is being celebrated annually in America’s classrooms.

Check-out these Books, DVDs, videos, kits, and other teaching materials:

UNK Celebrates Research and Creative Activity

The second edition of New Frontiers was published this fall, and on Monday, September 14, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research hosted a reception to recognize the quality work represented in two successful volumes of New Frontiers, as well as to celebrate research and creative activity across campus.

Volume II of New Frontiers is now available online, with a link from UNK’s homepage. The publication showcases the invigorating atmosphere at UNK created by the combination of scholarly activity and quality teaching, enhancing the overall educational experience for students.

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research launched New Frontiers in the Fall of 2008. The goal of the publication is “to demonstrate how faculty research, scholarship and all forms of creative activity enhance the learning-centered mission of the University.”

Congratulations to those featured in New Frontiers, as well as the many faculty across campus who continue to engage in quality research and creative activity.

In a continuing effort to provide faculty with the most current policy information, the Faculty Handbook has been revised and reorganized. The purpose of the handbook is to gather the documents and policies that inform and guide critical decisions, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (2009-2011).

  • Faculty Senate
To keep faculty informed and in the spirit of shared goverenance, the 2009-2010 Faculty Senate Roster is posted on the Faculty Senate home page. The page also contains links to meeting agendas, meeting minutes of both the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate committees, and the Faculty Senate Constitution and Bylaws.

  • Graduate Council
A webpage has been created for the Graduate Council. It contains information regarding changes to graduate courses or programs, as well as a list of the 2009 Graduate Program Committees and a link to important Graduate Faculty announcements.

  • WI/CD Committee
The WI/CD Committee has posted a schedule of deadlines for the fall semester on the WI/CD Committee page. The page also contains instructions for applying for WI or CD designation, as well as a committee roster, agendas, and minutes.
